The Paphos-Polis Chrysochous Highway is Back on Track
After navigating significant contractual hurdles in recent years, the highly anticipated Paphos-Polis Chrysochous motorway project is officially moving forward in 2026 with a massive injection of momentum. Following key legal rulings late last year that cleared the path for a new tender process, the Public Works Department has set its sights on accelerating this crucial national infrastructure upgrade.

This project represents one of the most vital connectivity developments for the western coast of Cyprus. The government has recently reaffirmed its commitment that the final motorway will be a modern, four-lane highway designed to drastically improve road safety, boost regional economic growth, and cut travel times.
The immediate focus for early 2026 is the €90.2 million Phase 1 development, connecting Ayia Marinouda to Stroumbi—a distance of roughly 15.5 kilometers. This is not a simple paving job. The route cuts directly through challenging, uneven terrain and requires immense civil engineering feats, including the construction of two major tunnels (up to 720 meters long), five massive valley bridges, and numerous underpasses and overpasses.
For the heavy industry and construction sectors, this project is a logistical giant. Carving a modern highway through the Paphos hills demands continuous, large-scale earthmoving operations, specialized heavy-duty off-road traction, and uninterrupted material transport.
Simultaneously, the second phase of the project (connecting Stroumbi to Polis Chrysochous) is also advancing, with tenders opening in early 2026. Together, these developments guarantee that the Paphos region will remain a massive hub of heavy construction activity, demanding the highest levels of machinery reliability and zero-downtime logistics for years to come.
